Dear Heart,
For so long, you only knew one way to survive.
You beat faster than you should have, carrying the weight of worries that were never meant to be yours alone. You became so accustomed to living in survival mode that peace felt unfamiliar. Rest felt unsafe. Silence felt like a warning.
I remember the days when every challenge demanded another burst of strength. There was always another responsibility to carry, another crisis to navigate, another reason to stay alert. Without realizing it, you became an adrenaline junkie—always racing, always preparing, always expecting the next storm. You didn't know how to slow down because slowing down once meant vulnerability.
But life has a gentle way of teaching us that seasons change.
There came a moment when I realized the danger was no longer standing at my door, yet you were still living as though it were. My surroundings had changed, but you hadn't received the message. You were still protecting me from battles that had already ended.
So I began talking to you.
Not with fear.
Not with frustration.
But with compassion.
I would place my hand over my chest and quietly remind you:
"You are safe."
"You are loved."
"You are cared for."
"There is no need to run."
"There is no need to hide."
"You can rest now."
At first, those words felt foreign. Healing rarely happens the moment we decide we want it. It happens little by little, as our mind and body begin to believe what our heart has struggled to accept.
Over time, I noticed something beautiful.
You no longer startled at every uncertainty.
You no longer mistook calm for danger.
You began to trust that not every day would bring another battle.
That trust didn't happen overnight. It was built through small moments of grace, quiet mornings, deep breaths, honest conversations, and the gentle realization that peace was no longer something to chase—it had become a place I could live.
Perhaps you're reading this today with a heart that feels much like mine once did.
Maybe you've become so accustomed to carrying burdens that you no longer know how to set them down. Maybe your thoughts race even when everything around you is quiet. Maybe your body is exhausted, but your heart still believes it has to remain on guard.
If that's you, I want you to know something.
There is nothing wrong with you.
Your heart learned to survive the only way it knew how.
And just as it learned to survive, it can also learn to rest.
Be patient with yourself.
Healing is not asking your heart to forget what it has endured. It is gently teaching it that it no longer has to live as though every moment is an emergency.
Today, I still place my hand over my heart from time to time.
Not because it is racing anymore, but because I want it to remember what we have learned together.
That peace is not weakness.
That rest is not laziness.
That slowing down is not giving up.
It is allowing ourselves to become whole again.
So today, dear heart...
Take a slow breath.
Release what no longer belongs to you.
Let your shoulders soften.
Let your spirit become still.
You don't have to earn your rest.
You don't have to prove your worth through exhaustion.
You have carried enough.
Now...
Rest.
You are safe.
You are loved.
You are cared for.
And you are finally home.
Until next time...
Be gentle with yourself.
Healing isn't measured by how quickly you move forward, but by how kindly you learn to care for the parts of yourself that have been carrying the weight for far too long.
With gratitude,
Ishah Phoenix
